Head-End
A head-end can either be a hub, CO (Central Office), a WC (Wire Center), or a HE (Head End). A Head End is a terminating entity where fiber sheaths can be terminated and Inside Plant rack frames or X-Conn added devices can be associated for terminating fiber circuits.
A Head End is the origin of a place that feeds an area, whether it be as a light source, a cable signal, etc. Open the Head Ends dialog by clicking on File > OpenComms Settings > OSP – Common > Head Ends to display the following setup dialog:
Editing a Head-End Model
- Select a Head End from the Device List. Highlighting the Head End loads the information into the dialog box.
- Edit the Head End Attributes input fields.
- Click Update to save changes into the spec file.
Creating a Head-End Model
- Key in the Model name, Manufacturer and Cost.
- If this device will be used in Fiber to the Premise design using the FTTP utility, check the FTTP LCC button for this to be used as an LCC device.
- To activate the Cell Librarywindow, type in the cell Name and press enter or click on Select and select the appropriate cell from the Select Cell dialog box list.
- Click Add to save the Head End into the spec file.

Head Ends Guide
Other devices in a fiber network may have similar characteristics to a head-end type. Some networks use hub devices and assign them to head-end types.
If you have hub devices that behave like a head-end type, create them here and use them in the network design.
It is important to plan exactly how to implement the head-end types before entering data into the spec file. Hubs especially can be built in the head-end or splice enclosure type depending upon how it is used in the network. Have a complete list of all of the head-end and hub types before building the spec file.
